Dexter Wrestling Club Levels:

Dexter Wrestling Club has been growing and over the past couple of years the club has been working to meet the challenge of providing the best opportunities for all of our wrestlers to grow and develop. So this year we are introducing two distinct levels so we can tailor our practices and development to best fit the kids needs. There are two levels that make up the Dexter Wrestling Club. The objective is to find the best fit for each wrestler to grow and develop:

Level 1

Primarily first and second year wrestlers still learning the basics of the sport and competing at the "novice" level in tournaments. Wrestlers at this level will learn the basics of scoring and gain an introductory understanding of the sport. They will learn basic positioning, take-downs, break-downs, turns, and defense. Intensity at this level is light to medium with the goal being to develop wrestlers to be ready for level 2. Practices will be a balance of instruction, drilling, wrestling, and game-play.

Level 2

Primarily third year wrestlers up through sixth grade. These are more experienced wrestlers looking to step into more intense competitive environments to develop more advanced wrestling skills. These wrestlers either have or will be wrestling in "open" competition in tournaments. These practices will build on skills learned in level one to develop more advanced execution of positioning, take-downs, break-downs, turns, and defense. Intensity at this level will be a definite step up from level 1 (medium to high) as these practices are designed for the more serious and experienced wrestlers in the club. In the interest of building team unity in the Dexter wrestling community, kids will participate in level 1 practices on occasion to be a part of helping the less experienced wrestlers improve and to build cohesiveness within the club.

Summary

The above descriptions are guidelines. Each child will be assessed individually to include factors such as experience, kids/parents desires, performance, focus, and, coaches recommendations. Decisions on wrestlers placement are ultimately determined by the board taking into consideration all of these factors. Assessments are ongoing and recommendations for advancement may well come for wrestlers who show rapid improvement and desire for greater challenges. Likewise, some wrestlers may be best served by a decision to move back down for a time. The goal is to make decisions that are in the best interest of each kid and to find the right fit for the best environment for wrestlers to continue developing.
